Junior was born at home on his family's farm and attended the one-room country school just up the road, and then high school in Bloomfield, attending his senior year and graduated from Ottumwa High School. He met Carolee while at Bloomfield High and they married on September 1, 1955 and lived in Ottumwa.

Junior worked at Haw Hardware in Ottumwa and belonged to the Church of Christ. He and Carolee had 2 children Larry Wayne and Julie Kay. The family frequently visited Colorado, fell in love with the mountains and in 1964 moved from Iowa to Colorado, spending many weekends in the Rockies, camping and trail ridingm deer and turkey bow-and-arrow hunting.

In Colorado, Junior first worked at King Soopers and Safeway and in 1971 was employed by Public Service Co., where he worked for 27 years until his retirement in 1998. One of Junior's main interests was horses. He lived 15 years on a horse ranch in rural Hudson and the last 14 years in rural Brighton where he bred, trained and rode many good horses. He was proud of his breeding, raising and training Dandy Jay West who later became a world reserve champion in Western Pleasure. Over the years, he enjoyed horse training, trail riding, cutting and especially liked helping other riders with their horses. Horses were truly some of his best friends.

Junior was preceded by his father Barney Ruby; mother Ethel Ruby; and brothers Clarence and Lawrence McCombs. He is survived by his wife Carolee Ruby of Brighton; son Larry (Keely) Ruby of Ottumwa, IA; daughter Julie (Lonnie) Ford of Andover, KS; sisters Irene Simmons of Commerce City; Betty Saylor of Ottumwa, IA and Alice (Terry) Norris of Oskaloosa, IA; grandchildren Melanie Conrad of Irving, TX; Crystal Conrad of Wichita, KS; John Ford of Wichita, KS and Travis Ruby of Ottumwa, IA; and great-grandchildren Malachai Conrad and Madison Jenkins of Irving, TX and Messiah Conrad of Wichita, KS.
