Ann (Hutton) LaRue was born in Ohio to parents who were from Virginia. She was married on November 12, 1835 to John LaRue in Wayne Township, Henry County, Indiana. According to the 1840 census, John Larew was then residing in Knights Town, Henry Co., Indiana with a female age 20-30 and two females under the age of 5 (presumbably Ann and their daughters, Sarah and Mary). The 1850 census in Henry County lists Ann Larew (born in Ohio), age 32, living with John Larew, age 34 (born in Pennsylvania) and their children Sarah, age 13; Mary, age 10; James, age 8; and Ruth, age 2. John may have been a hostler (one who looks after the horses at an inn), and seven other people were listed at the same residence. By the 1860 census Ann was living in Kane Township, Benton Co., Iowa, with her seventeen-year old son, James and her twelve-year old daughter, Ruth. Her daughter Mary was living in Mourltrie, IL with the oldest daughter, Sarah and husband, Thomas Creager. Ann, James and Ruth were still living in Benton County, in Belle Plaine, IA, in the 1870 census. Ann reported that she was a widow. (It is not known when John LaRue had died, but he did not appear in the 1860 census with Ann. ) James was listed as a laborer, and Ruth was a school teacher. Sarah and Thomas Creagar moved to Missouri after the Civil War. By 1880 Ruth had married (Henry Schlicting) and at the time of the census, 61-year old Ann was visiting her son James and his wife and baby in Evanston, WY. Ann died in 1888, and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Belle Plaine, IA., next to her daughter, Ruth.
