Prussian-born, he married Maria Spangler Dennes November 4, 1856, and fathered David S. (b. 02/06/58), John Henry "Harry" (b. 01/07/61), Samuel F (b. 04/28/62), and Charles A. (b. 02/28/64). In 1860, he was a cigar maker living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 11" tall with light hair and gray eyes. His name was also spelled "Denues" and very possibly was pronounced "Dennis."

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. He then enlisted and mustered into federal service at York September 19, 1861, as a private with Co. H, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Although quickly promoted to corporal, he was reduced to ranks to date April 19, 1862. That may be why he deserted on June 20, 1862, just before the regiment left railroad guard duty for the field. He was never apprehended and never returned to duty.

Later in life, he became a successful whip manufacturer in York where he died at his home on East Philadelphia Street from "dropsy." Former army comrade Charles Henry Stallman obviously had forgiven Dennes for his desertion thirty-seven years earlier because he served as a pall bearer at Dennes' funeral.
