Drinking Lye by Mistake Fatal to Amsterdam Man. Alfred Lench, 71, Dies in St. Mary's Hospital Soon Afterwards.

AMSTERDAM, April 19 (Special).— After taking a portion of lye by mistake instead of salts, Alfred Lench, 71, of 3 DeWitt Street died last night at St. Mary's Hospital. Lench had been
ill for some time and was heard entering the bathroom of his home. A moment later he called for help and when his wife and others in the house ran to his aid he exclaimed, "I made a mistake. I wanted to take salts and I drank lye."

Mr. Lench was born in England coming to Amsterdam 21 years ago and being employed in the Shuttleworth mills as a carpet weaver. He was a charter member of the local Lodge of the sons of St. George and a member of Lord Hill Lodge of Odd Fellows' in Kidderminster England, Also a member of St. Ann's Church.

He is survived by his wife; a son, George, of Freehold, N.J.; six daughters; Mrs. John Brindle, Mrs. Frank Pagett, Emma Lench and Ethel Lench, all of Amsterdam. Mrs. Christopher Doak of Wells, and Mrs. George Hill of Freehold, N.J., as well as three brothers, Joseph, Albert and James of
Kidderminster and nine grandchildren.
