Shirley Clarke

Services for Shirley C. Clarke, 83, Sherrard, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Burial is in Cable, Ill., Cemetery.

Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to Preemption United Methodist Church, where he was a member for over 50 years.

Mrs. Clarke died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 1996, at Hays & Hays Residential Manor, Sherrard.

The former Shirley Christine Carlson was born Dec. 15, 1912, in the house in which she lived most of her life in Sherrard, the daughter of Carl Emil and Hulda Thor Carlson. She married Evans Lipton Clarke on Dec. 24, 1941, in Davenport. He died June 10, 1993.

She attended Sherrard schools and was an honors graduate of Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta national sorority.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Rock Island Plow Company, Rock Island, and for J.I. Case Company, Rock Island, before leaving to devote her time to her family.

She participated in the United Methodist Women, where she was widely known for baking cookies and Swedish coffeebreads for church activities.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and cooking.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law….; a sister … and several cousins. A daughter, Jane Clarke McClure, is deceased.
