Cityan Once Nominated for Mother of Year Mrs. Etta Caldwell, 101, Dead; Rites Are Wednesday
"Mrs. Etta Caldwell, 101 year old resident of Oklahoma City since 1925, died Monday morning in her home at 2029 W. 18. Services will be at 2:30 PM Wednesday in Smith & Kernke funeral chapel, with burial in Memorial Park cemetery.
Born April 13, 1857, in Creelsboro, KY she was orphaned at an early age and worked her way through school. For several years she taught school in Kentucky. She married Robert T Caldwell in 1882, and after his death in 1904, she moved six boys and one girl to New Mexico. Staking a claim of 160 acres there and taking up farming, the family met difficulty after two years of drought. The two older sons sought jobs elsewhere to help support the family. After her children had finished grade school, she moved to the town of Elido, New Mexico and operated a small hotel there.
After her older boys had reached college age, she moved to Albuquerque where they attended the University of New Mexico. At the outbreak of WW I, four sons volunteered for service in the army. One son, Rufus, was in the tank corp, and was wounded , earning the silver star. A charter member of the American War Mothers, she worked diligently with that organization, visiting soldiers in Veteran's hospital.
After the war, she and her two youngest sons returned to the University of New Mexico, where she became housemother of Phi Mu sorority. She remained there until 1925, when she came to Oklahoma City to live with her youngest son, Charles, manager of the Life Insurance Co. of Virginia agency here. While active in the American War Mothers Mrs Caldwell held all the offices on the state level, and at one time was a national historian for the group. In 1954 she was nominated for Oklahoma Mother of the Year, but a stroke forced her to resign from the nomination.
She is survived by three sons, Charles, of the home; James A of Cincinnati, OH; and Rollin T of Milltown, KY; 30 grandchildren and great grandchildren and one great great grandchild."

From internet:
'There she put her youngest, Charles, through the university of OK. In 1957 she was honored on her 100th birthday. Some of the societies to which she belonged were: Bible study club, Woman's Missionary Society, American War Mother, Red Cross, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Methodist Church that she taught for.
