Gary Dale Webb, 16, drowned September 5, 1955, while swimming in the Montrose Lake about a half mile north of Montrose in Cumberland county.

Gary was at the lake with his father, Louis Webb; three brothers, Jerry, Steve and Lynn: an uncle, Fletcher Robards, and a cousin, Larry Robards, all of Dieterich.

Gary was in the water with one of the other boys when he suddenly sank from sight.

His body was recovered in 15 feet of water by state police called from Effingham.

The lake is the reservoir for the village of Montrose.

Deputy coroner Dale McElravy of Cumberland county stood by during the search for the boy's body. He said he would not hold an inquest because death was obviously an accident.

Louis Webb, the father, is employed at the Sears Roebuck and Company store in Effingham. The family formerly lived in Effingham and moved to Dieterich in 1947.

Gary is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Webb; three brothers, Jerry Lee, Lynn, and Stevie; three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Webb and Mrs. Colvy Tedrick.

Funeral services were conducted at the Wright Funeral Home and at the Dieterich grade school gym with Rev. George Meyer, pastor of the local Methodist church officiating. Burial was in the Dieterich cemetery with the Wright service in charge.

The Dieterich American Legion Post 628 each year awards one boy from the Dieterich school unit who can qualify as set by the Department of Illinois to attend Boys State at Springfield. Gary Webb qualifiec and attended the Boys State in 1955.
