Born in Spring Garden Township, the son of David & Fannie (Gable) Marks. He married Jane Ann Schmuck January 8, 1860, in York, and fathered William H. (b. 09/06/60), Samuel F. (b. 05/22/66), Rebecca (b. 04/01/70), Emma C. (b. 09/23/74), Albert G. (b. 09/23/74), A. Blanche & Mabel F. (b. 04/23/78), and Bird R. (b. 02/29/80), and Foley[?] (b. 06/24/82). In 1860, he was a cooper living in York Borough. In 1860, he was a store keeper (cooper also reported) living in York Borough and stood 5' 5" tall with dark hair, gray eyes, and a scar over his right eye (although when he got the scar is uncertain).

A Civil War veteran, he first served at the rank of private with Co. A, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry April 20 - July 30, 1861. On August 27, 1864, he enrolled in Philadelphia with the U.S. Navy, serving at the rank of landsman aboard the U.S.S. Princeton, Iris, and Wabash. Honorably discharged August 8, 1865,in Washington DC.

He died of "La Grippe associated with organic disease of heart, valvular insufficiency of many years duration."
