"Jette's letters home to Germany were made into the book "Hold Dear As Always: A German Immigrant Life in Letters", edited by Dr. Adolf Schroeder of the University of Missouri at Columbia. Of her ten children, she lost three -- Max, Johanna, and Rudolf -- within a few weeks due to scarlet fever in Westphalia, MO, where the family was then living. Another was killed fighting in Union Army in the Civil War.She was a remarkable lady with great strength and endurance."
