Capuchin friar Lloyd Thiel, age 80, passed away September 19 at St. Bonaventure Monastery. Father Lloyd was very well known in the City of Detroit and for many, Father Lloyd was the ‘face' of the Capuchins.

Father Lloyd was born in Hilbert, Wisconsin. He was invested in 1948, perpetually professed in 1952, and ordained in 1956. From 1957-1973, he ministered at St. Lawrence Seminary High School, the Capuchin seminary located in Mt. Calvary, WI where he had been a student before joining the order. He assisted the seminary with fundraising efforts and he also taught Latin.

He was elected provincial minister in 1973 and served the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph for two terms. Fr. Lloyd served as director of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen for 14 years. Before his retirement in 2004, Fr. Lloyd served in the development office in Detroit. He was also a part of the Pastoral Care team at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and assisted at the Christ the Good Shepherd Parish in Lincoln Park, Sacred Heart in Roseville, and other parishes. He considered this work to be the crown of his ministry as he could concentrate on serving as a spiritual advisor.

Father Lloyd was described by Capuchin of St. Joseph provincial minister, Father John Celichowski, as "a friar of great passion and compassion: he loved being a Capuchin, being a priest, and serving others. He dedicated much of his life to ministries to our brothers and sisters in need. Lloyd will be remembered by his fellow Capuchins as a Provincial Minister who was open, kind, and generous to all, especially those who were in difficulty."
He is lovingly survived by his brothers, Melvin (Martha) of Chilton; Harold (Dolores) of Hilbert; Leon (Carol) of Appleton and sister Alice (Ralph) Steiner, Chilton. He is further survived by his Capuchin Brothers.

Visitation will take place Thursday, September 23, 3 PM to 8 PM, at the Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park.
