Funeral service for Roland Pence, 46, of Westport will be 10:30am Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at New Life Fellowship Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Joe Moslander will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Westport. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-7pm Monday, at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Friends may sign his online guest book at the bottom of the page.

Roland passed away Thursday, September 16,2010 near Clear Lake, SD.

Roland Joseph Pence was born March 3, 1964 to Bennett and Viola (Huettl) Pence in Aberdeen. He grew up on a farm west of Westport, attended school in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1982.

After high school, Roland attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, graduating in 1984. Following graduation, Roland worked as a mechanic at Heberle Ford Company in Forsyth, Montana. Shortly thereafter, Roland pursued his aspiration of NASCAR racing and went to work on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit. He worked for several drivers including Buddy Arrington, David Pierson, Davey Allison and later Roger Mandeville's IMSA sports car racing team. He was a loyal Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan. He was also employed with Hayssen Sandiacre in Duncan, South Carolina for many years. He later returned to Westport and worked for Quality Welding in Aberdeen doing Arc, Mig and Tig Welding and Fabrication.

Roland later attended North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2009. During the summer months he worked for Heagley Harvesting, assisting with custom combining throughout the Midwest. He was also employed with the Brown County Highway Department at the time of his death.

Roland had many different interests and he continued to pursue many of them including watercolor painting. He never passed up a moment to discuss current events. He was an active member of New Life Fellowship Church, enjoyed studying the Bible and he was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

Surviving Roland are his parents, Bennett (Dorothy) Pence of Barnard, SD and Viola Pence of Westport, three brothers, Bernard Pence of Aberdeen, Bryan Pence of Aberdeen and Michael (Mary) Pence of Westport, two sisters, Rita (Sheldon) Lenling and Monica (Michael) Karpinske both of Aberdeen, thirteen nieces and nephews and a very good friend, Ruth (Graham) Stevens of Greenville, SC.

Roland was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents and one sister, Barbara.
