Susan Mae Edmond, born Susan Mae Caponera on Aug. 15, 1922, died peacefully at her home in Pueblo on May 4, 2000. Susan was born at her parents' home on Elm Street in Pueblo. She attended public schools and graduated from Pueblo Central High School at the age of 16. She went on to get her bachelor of arts degree at Greeley (now University of Northern Colorado) at age 19 and immediately started her teaching career back at Central High School. Susan taught for several years before getting married and having three children. In 1954, she returned to teaching, and after one year of working with first graders she moved back to Central, where she taught until retiring in 1990. During her more than 35 years of teaching at Central, Susan touched the lives of thousands of students. Her specialties included English, accounting, business law, economics, shorthand, typing, business English and communications. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mrs. Edmond was affectionately known as "Auntie Sue" to many Central football players. Susan was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling. Mrs. Edmond has three children who all graduated from Central. Her daughter, Carole, is currently a principal at a Chicago Catholic school. Her oldest son, Robert, is a retired federal agent living in Hawaii, and her younger son, David, is a licensed psychotherapist in Pueblo. In addition to being survived by her children, Susan is also survived by her mother, Anna Caponera; her sister, Marie Novak; and her brother, John Caponera. Susan has five grandchildren, Suzanne Palmore, Rome Palmore IV, Deborah Palmore Gourdine, Julie Edmond and Matthew Edmond. Susan also has five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation, noon to 8 p.m. at George McCarthy Funeral Home, with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass, Monday, May 8, 2000, 2 p.m., Shrine of St. Therese. Entombment, Imperial Memorial Gardens.
