Hewicker, John Jacob 1846-1915

REMSEN. From the Bell-Enterprise.

On Tuesday, February 23, at 9:40 a.m. occurred the death of one our prominent townsmen and most respected citizens, John Hewicker, who passed away at the age of sixty-eight years after an illness of several months with cancer of the stomach, which later developed dropsy.

John Jacob Hewicker was born on April 12, 1846, in the village of Barmstedt, Schleswig-Holstein. He was married in that country and remained there until he was twenty-five years of age, when, after the death of his wife, he came to the United States, settling in Davenport, Iowa. He remained there until 1885, when he came to Plymouth county, settling on a farm south of here and on March 4, 1887, he was united in marriage to Ottilie Klingbeil. They remained on the farm and prospered until 1907 and reared a family of eight children. One of their children died in youth. In 1907 the family moved to Remsen, purchasing a splendid home, while the parents retired from business.

Besides the sorrowing widow the deceased man is survived by the following children: Clara, Ida, Mrs. Minnie Schumacher, Flora, Frank, Walter and John. All of them still reside in Remsen. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, March 2, 1915, page 4.

JOHN HEWICKER DEAD. Passed Away Tuesday After Lingering Illness … On Tuesday, February 23, at 9:40 a.m. occurred the death of one our prominent townsmen and most respected citizens, John Hewicker, who passed away at the age of sixty-eight years after an illness of several months with cancer of the stomach, which later developed dropsy. Mr. Hewicker was taken sick early last November and since then was unable to be among his friends. His illness grew worse rapidly and nothing could eleviate the suffering which he was forced to undergo and although his death was expected, it came as a great shock to the family and is a source of sincere regret to his acquaintances.

John Hewicker was a man successful in life through earnest and hard effort and through upright dealings with all with whom he came in contact. He possessed strong Christian qualities and with all of his acquaintances he was well liked because of his practice of the principles that lead toward the right. Not only is his death a sorrowful blow to the immediate family, but his friends will miss him in their circle and will entertain nothing but pleasant memories of the days of his earthly existence.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon. Rev. J. P. Guenther will conduct the usual services at the home at one o'clock and a half hour later services will be conducted in the German Lutheran Christ church, of which the deceased was a staunch member.
