OBITUARY
Carrollton Grid Aid Dies Scouting Game
GARLAND, Texas (Sp.) - Buford Turrentine, 41-year-old- assistant coach at Carrollton High School, collapsed and died of a heart attack Friday night at the press box at Williams Stadium while scouting the Garland-Parris football game.
Garland justice of the peace Theron Ward said Turrentine was apparently dead when the ambulance people picked him up.
Turrentine was named head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Carrollton High Scool only in September. It was his first job since graduating with a master's degree from East Texas State College this summer.
While attending East Texas State, Turrentine served as an assistance in football for four years.
A native of Commerce, he spent 21 years in the Navy before retiring and starting to college.
During his Navy career, Turrentine was an all-star center on the Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet team from 1947 through 1950. He made the all-Japan team while playing for the Navy in 1952. He was on the coaching staff of the Atsugi Flyers, a Naval team that won the Far East championship in 1953.
Carrollton head coach Nolan Poovey said late Friday night that Poovey [Turrentine] had served as the team's No. 1 scout this fall.
Services were pending at Williams Funeral Home in Garland. His survivors include wife Ann and two daughters, Susan and Karen.
