Keith W. Gosling, age 60, of Marblehead, died at home unexpectedly Tuesday morning.

He was born in Paterson, NJ the son of the late James and Marion (Rozell) Gosling, and moved with his family to Marblehead when he was six months old. While growing up he enjoyed working in the summer as a deckhand aboard fishing boats in Marblehead Harbor. Following his graduation from Marblehead High School in the Class of 1965, he served in the United States Coast Guard during the Viet Nam War.

Mr. Gosling's service included two historic missions aboard the Icebreaker Eastwind. One of the missions was to break channels for ship in the Antarctic to service Naval ships positioned at five bases in that region. Another mission was a circumnavigation of the Antarctic, which provided invaluable oceanographic information to support research programs in marine science as well as the design of modern polar icebreakers. He also had service in Europe as well as Boston and Salem where he had served aboard rescue helicopters.

Following his discharge in 1970, Mr. Gosling owned and operated the Marblehead Deli at 5 Corners until 1973 when he became a professional industrial painter. A member of the Painter's and Allied Trade District Council # 35, he had worked on various projects on both the North Shore to the South Shore for many years until his retirement three years ago.

An accomplished woodworker, he is known for the cribbage boards he made as well as his ability to complete puzzles of all types. He is also known for his endless knowledge of trivia and his card playing skills.

Most of all he is known for his love of people. His home was constantly full of family and friends dropping in to visit. On the weekends, it was not unusual for him to drop in on his family on Sunday mornings to share his fishing stories of the day. He was also a member and officer of the former Marblehead Elks where he had many friends as well.

Mr. Gosling is survived by two daughters Sharon Gonick and her husband Sean of Reading and Jennifer Gosling and her husband Kevin Klink of Mattydale, NY; two grandchildren Tyler Gonick of Reading and Devin Klink of Mattydale, NY; his sister Linda Murray of Charlestown; a nephew Sean Murray of Oahu, HI; a great nephew Keanu Murray of Oahu, HI. and his former wife Jean (Karydis) Gosling of Marblehead.
