Pfc. Felix B. "Cowboy" Mestas Jr. - Walsenburg World-Independent - December 26, 1944 - Pfc. Mestas Reported Dead In Action - Killed By Bomb On Italian Front -Pfc. Felix B. Mestas Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix B. Mestas of La Veta, was reported killed in action Sept. 29, on the Italian front, according to recent word received here. He had previously been reported missing in action, but the last message reported his death. Pfc. Mestas, 23, entered the armed forces in November of 1942, and joined the active fighting in North Africa, being in the thick of the fighting until his death, it is reported. He was a member of the 350th Infantry Regiment, one of the 88th Infantry Division units attached to Gen. Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army. He was born in La Veta, and was a life-long resident of Huerfano county prior to his military service. He took his basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif., Camp Van Dorn, Miss., and Camp Carson, Colo., prior to being sent overseas. He was reported missing Oct. 19, last. Survivors include five sisters, two of whom are in the U.S. Army Nurse corps, Lt. Olvia Mestas, who is stationed in an English base hospital; and Lt. Grace Mestas, now stationed at Buckley Field. Other sisters are Mrs. Stella Vigil of Los Angles, Mrs. Silvie Vigil of Pueblo, and Arabella of the family home. Also by one brother, Waldo, also of the family home. Huerfano World - December 1, 1994 - This Week in La Veta History - 1948: The body of Pfc. Felix B. "Cowboy" Mestas Jr., was interred in the La Veta Cemetery Sunday after services in the Methodist Church. Huerfano World - May 16, 2002 - This Week in La Veta History - 1952: After two years of effort a memorial to Pfc. Felix B. Mestas will be placed and dedicated by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Huerfano World - October 10, 2002 - This Week in La Veta History - 1944: Pvt. Felix B. Mestas Jr. was cited by the 88th Infantry Division and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for combat in Italy.
