Hazel Kirke Slaughter Britton married only one husband - Thomas Jones Britton, Sr.(1879-19430 They were married in Montgomery Alabama, May 24, 1909 when she was age 20. The person, James Marion Britton, buried in the same cemetery, was much older. Looking at the grave marker, it appears that his date of birth was May or Mar 8, 1818. It notes that he served the Confederate States of America and shows his company/unit number (illegible) Death appears to be Nov 13 and the year is perhaps 1868. Hazel was born Aug 28, 1888 In Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky and died Feb 25 1976 in Florala, Covington County, Alabama. Her husband and his brother, William Henry Britton (1860-1909) founded the community of Lakewood, Florida, four miles south of Florala and Hazel was the postmistress of Lakewood for over 26 years. Lakewood sat on the highest point in the state of Florida - 345 ft above mean sea level. It's the lowest high point of all states highest points. The land was later donated to the state and stands today as Britton Hill and Lakewood Park named in honor the Britton of Hazel's brother-in -law, William Henry Britton.
