The funeral of the late Charles Edward Layman held at Troutville Sunday afternoon, was largely attended by Roanokers. The Norfolk and Western ran a special car for those who wished to pay their last tribute to their departed friend.

With music furnished by the Hollins choir the services were conducted in the Baptist church by Dr Geo. B Taylor, assisted by Rev. J A Dove. With a brief review of the life of Mr Layman, R T Taylor told of his achievements, of his indomitable spirit, his tireless energy and the love and respect with which he was held by all who knew him.

It is estimated that nearly two thousand people attended the services, including railroad officials, representatives of the telegraphers and the fraternal order.

The services at the grave were in charge of the masons, and the Knight Templars and Odd Fellows acted as escort.

The floral tributes were large and beautiful, and included many special designs from the general committee, railroad officials and brotherhood representatives of the Southern Chesapeake and Ohio, the Virginian and the Order of Railway Telegraphers.

Mr Layman was 58 years old and is survived by his wife, who was Miss Minnie Linkenhoker and the following children: Mrs C W Alwin, Glasgow; Mrs Rex Baugh, Logan, WV; Mrs Ethel McKenna, Maryland; Mrs Mary Pendleton, Norfolk.

For more than twenty-five years he had held the position of general chairman of the O R T on the Norfolk and Western system. He was the oldest telegrapher on the Shenandoah division. He was held in highest esteem by his employers and was greatly loved by his fellow telegraphers, whose interests were ever on his heart.
