Josephine (Orlando) Bombaci, of 80 Bokum Road, Essex, died unexpectedly on Saturday (September 18, 2010) at her home.

She was born December 20, 1920 to Pasquale and Anna (Lamberti) Orlando in Danbury, CT.

After graduating from Danbury High School at the age of sixteen, she attended Danbury Teachers College for two years before entering and graduating from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1942.

At her graduation from Hartford Hospital, she would meet her future husband. She married Santo (Sam) Bombaci in 1946 and enjoyed forty-four years of marriage before he passed in 1988.

She spent the last sixty-four years at her home on Bokum Road raising her family and working alongside her husband with his passion, cultivated blueberries. Her passion included her Church, Community, and local politics.

She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, where she was a founding member of the Essex Catholic Women's Group in January of 1954. Her membership in the Essex Democratic Town Committee spanned over four decades. She was known for her advocacy for "doing what's best for Essex" and stayed involved in Essex town activities and politics until the day she died. Until recently, she also enjoyed spending time in Marco Island, FL.

Her surviving family includes son, John and his wife Linda of Northwood, NH; son, Wayne and his wife Barbara of Newtown, CT; and son, Mark of Essex; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Carmela Jagush; her brother, Matthew Orlando; her sisters-in-law, Gloria Bombaci, Irene Bombaci, Jenny Cutone; her brother-in-law Thomas Bombaci; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Prospect Street, Essex.
Burial will follow in the Centerbrook Cemetery.
