Christina Louise Nelson, 63, of Eau Claire passed away unexpectedly after a short illness on June 9, 2010.
Chris was born on December 15, 1946, in Eau Claire, WI, the oldest of three daughters of Jerold O. and Esther Nelson. She graduated from Altoona High School in 1965 and attended UW-Eau Claire where she enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, and then was off to a number of adventures. In the early '70s Chris worked as a secretary at UW-Green Bay. She returned to Eau Claire in 1973 and worked at Luther Hospital and Midelfort Clinic. Then in 1977 she took a position as an academic department associate at UW-Eau Claire, most recently in the Kinesiology Department which shared an office with the Athletic Department. She loved working with all the students, coaches, many of the professors and her good friend and office mate Nancy. They had lots of good times together. She was an avid supporter, both with time and money, of the UW-Eau Claire Women's Basketball team. Chris retired in March 2006.
Chris had eclectic interests. She loved to travel to visit friends near and far. She was one of the early members of the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Club and spent many hours at the Hobbs Observatory. She would drag her sisters and friends to the Altoona football field to lie down and look up at the stars. She taught them how to find and identify the constellations and their mythology. One night we even watched the aurora borealis undulate across the sky. Chris was a volunteer and board member of Kinship Program, a mentoring program for children and young people, for many years. While on the board, she organized their participation in Sawdust City Days in Eau Claire. She was a volunteer and board member of the Eau Claire County Humane Society where she rescued her many cats and dogs over the years (as well as the strays she would bring home in the early years). Chris loved photography and took semi professional quality photos. She captured some of the best images of her family and friends, and the nature shots and spaces around her world where creative and imaginative, some even funky (lips, she took pictures of lips). Chris was a voracious reader, having stacks of paperbacks, passing them on to her sister, then to the library. Although, once she rediscovered the library and home delivery, her stacks diminished.
Christina is survived by her sisters, Marcia Nelson (Doug Flee) of Middleton, Susan (Linus) Zillmer of Tomah; and her cherished niece and nephew, Angela (Mike) Woody of Appleton, and Mark Zillmer (Sarah Langfeld) of Plymouth, MN.
Chris took them on many adventures, to see new sites, taught them new things, and gave them way more advice then needed, as many aunts do. Chris will be deeply missed by her lifelong friends, Ken Kloss and Ken Ragan from Georgia.
A celebration of Chris' life will be held on Thursday, July 8, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cremation Society of Wisconsin, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona, WI 54720. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the UW Eau Claire Foundation/Women's Basketball Team, P.O. Box 4004, Eau Claire, WI 54702-4004 or the Eau Claire County Humane Association, 3900 Old Town Hall Road, Eau Claire, WI 54701.
Online condolences may be shared at www.cremationsociety-wi.com. Cremation Society of Wisconsin is serving the family.
