"Funeral For Crash Victim On Wednesday
Fellow Students To Be Pallbearers At Colpitts Rites

The funeral of Carey Colpitts, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carey Colpitts of 822 North Dunn Street, who was fatally injured Sunday night in an auto wreck on the Kinser Pike, will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist church. The Rev. W. Douglas Rae, church pastor will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Hamilton. Jennings Stiles, Jack Hettle, Morris Beck, Lonn Branam and Phillip Bowers. Flower bearers also will be fellow students of the popular University school pupil, and will be Bill Adams, Bob Chaille. Bill Reed, Junior Hines, Bob Duncan and Jack Brown.

Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery.

The youth, who is survived by the parents, four sisters, three brothers and a grandfather, was killed after the car which he was driving north on the Kinser Pike, sideswiped a southbound vehicle driven by James Cadena and overturned, crashing into a heavy utility pole. Critically injured, the high school driver died at the Bloomington hospital less than an hour after he had been freed from the wreckage of his father’s car.

Geraldine Watts, 17-year-old Bloomington high school girl, received a fractured collar bone in the crash, though Phyllis Harrell, Richard Hickam and George Carpenter, Jr., who also were in the wrecked car, escaped with trivial injuries.

Colpitts, manager of the University high school track team, was a member of the First Baptist church, the Baptist Young People’s Union and the Boy Scouts of America.
