He was attached to the 1st Battalion Scots Guards Battlegroup deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Tpr Howarth and Sgt Andrew Jones were killed in an explosion during a vehicle patrol in the Bolan district of Lashkar Gah in Helmand Province.

Aged 20, Tpr Howarth attended school in Wimborne, Dorset before he enlisted inthe army in 2007. After completing armoured corps training, he became the third generation of his family to serve with The Queen's Royal Lancers. Friends remember his professionalism, sense of humour and larger than life character.

Tpr Howarth leaves behind his parents, John and Sarah, and his older brother Marcus along with other relatives and many friends. His family said, "He was a very loving son who loved his family and friends, he would light up any room when he walked in and would do anything for anyone. He had a heart of gold and will be deeply missed. He was proud to serve his country. He quoted before he left for Afghanistan, 'We give our today so you can have your tomorrow'."

Funeral with full military honours was held on October 6, 2010 at Wimborne Minster.
