Cape Cod Chronicle, The (Chatham, MA) - September 29, 2005
Deceased Name: Wendy Howes King Terry
CHATHAM — Longtime Chatham resident Wendy Howes King Terry passed away after a brief illness on Sept. 23. She left behind a rich legacy of family and friends. Wendy, who traced her ancestral roots to Cape Cod and Chatham early settlers, was the daughter of Ernest Grant Howes, Jr., and Dorothy Shattuck Howes, both late, of Chatham .

Wendy was born in Boston in 1929, graduated from the Fox Hollow School in Lennox and briefly studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston . In 1951 she was married to Frederick D. King and together they bore and raised nine children, spending each summer in Chatham until they became full-time residents here in 1974. In 1982, Wendy was re-married to William C. Terry, and together they lived in Chatham and continued to raise Wendy's nine as well as Bill's three children from a previous marriage until Bill's death in 1996.

Wendy was a lifelong sailor. She gained a solid reputation as a foredeck crew member sailing on Wianno Seniors on Nantucket Sound in the 1940s and '50s. In the 1960s she competed on several Prosser Cup woman's sailing teams for the Stage Harbor Yacht Club, where she became an honorary lifetime member. A descendent of China Trade sea captains, Wendy also raised a strong brood of sailors and modern-day master mariners as several of her children grew to skipper crab and salmon fishing vessels in Alaska for many years.

Wendy was also a dedicated volunteer. Among organizations she served were the Chatham Drama Guild, where she was a member for more than 50 years; the Creative Arts Center , which she helped organize; the Chatham Council on Aging; and the Nereid Network, in association with the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association. She, along with son Andy, hosted the inaugural "Hooker's Ball" fund raisers at her home in Chatham .

She is survived by her six sons, John, Samuel, Charles (Bones), Thomas, Andrew and Frederick (Tim); three daughters, Lydia , Mary and Frances; 15 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her dogs Abba and Millie.

Wendy's family and friends remember her for her vast pride in her children, her creative prowess as an artist and illustrator of children's books, her passion for history and family folklore, her love of sports and her dogs, and most of all for her generous spirit which attracted life long friends of all ages and all walks of life
