B. J. GLADDEN PASSES AWAY
WELL KNOWN CITIZEN SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS

Came to Carthage in 1885 and Was in Business Here For a Number of Years

Benjamin John Gladden, aged 60, years, a prominent and highly respected citizen of Carthage, died at 6 o'clock this morning at his home on South Grant Street after a long illness of Bright's Disease. He had lived here for 23 years.

Mr. Gladden was born in McDonald, Pennsylvania, September 10, 1848, and grew into young manhood in that town, receiving his education in the public schools here and later attending Eastman's business college at Poughkeepsie, New York.

On October 16, 1873 Mr. Gladden was married to Miss Margaret Campbell at McDonald and they resided at that place until 1885. During this time Mr. Gladden was not in any particular line of business, but employed his time looking after the business affairs of his mother.

In 1885, however, when Mr. and Mrs. Gladden came to Carthage, the former went into partnership with Charles Corwin in the implement business, the firm being known as Corwin & Gladden. Later Mr. Corwin sold his interest in the business to Newell Mix and the firm name became Gladden & Mix. About eight or nine years ago Mr. Gladden's health began to fail and since then he has not been engaged in active business.
