Civil War Union Brigadier General. He began his military career graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1836, and went on to serve in the Seminole War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd United States Artillery. During the Mexican War he was an Assistant Quartermaster, and was brevetted Major for gallant conduct at the Battle of Cerro Gordo. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was made Chief Quartermaster of the Department of Missouri, with headquarters at St. Louis, where he had charge of supplies and transportation for the various armies of the Mississippi Valley. Promoted Colonel in 1862, he furnished transportation and supplies for Major General William T. Sherman's command for the march across Mississippi. In 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers and was in change of transportation and supplies for the Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina expeditions. For his services in the war, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war he was Chief Quartermaster of the Pacific and retired at the rank of Brigadier General on March 21, 1878. He died at the age of 75 in Geneva, Switzerland.
