Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Prussia, he emigrating to Wisconsin in 1848, was a surveyor and a chief engineer on the Wisconsin Railroad, 1857 to 1859. At the start of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Captain in the 5th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He was appointed Colonel of the 9th Wisconsin Volunteer infantry, which he commanded in the southwest until he was made Brigadier General in June, 1862. He was assigned command of a brigade in Kansas and saw actions through Missouri for the remainder of the war. For his services, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. After the war, he relocated to the Utah Territory and was a land surveyor.
