Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in in Fulton County, Illinois, he was admitted to the bar in 1845 and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Illinois Volunteers during the Mexican War. With the start of the Civil War, he help rasie the 17th Illinois Regiment and was appointed Colonel in May, 1861. He served in actions through Missouri, Kentucky and was in command of Fort Girardeau, Maine. Promoted Brigadier General in April 1862, he led a brigade in the capture of Fort Donelson, Tennessee. For the rest of the war, he was the division commander at Bolivar, Tennessee. After the war, he was appointed by President Johnson collector of internal revenue for the 9th district of Illinois in 1867.
