Civil War Union Major General. Born in Belleville, Virginia, at the beginning of the Civil War he organized a company of volunteers and was appointed Colonel of the 7th Illinois Regiment. In May 1861, he was promoted Brigadier General served in southern Missouri and routed a large body of Confederates at Mount Zion. At the Battle of Shiloh, on the first day he was taken prisoner with most of his command. He was prisoner released in October, 1862, appointed Major General and commanded the post at Helena, Arkansas until he resigned his commission on October 28, 1863.
