Jay G. Updike was reared to farm pursuits, and was interested in agricultural matters since boyhood. He received his educational training in the public schools. In 1892 he embarded in a grocery enterprise at Plano, but after two years, returned to farming. On November 16, 1892, he married in Kendall Co., Miss Mary Ida Cherry in this county, Feb. 5, 1862, daughter of Hamilton "Moses" Cherry and Amanda (Hopkins) Cherry, natives of New York and Ohio, respectively. Mrs. Cherry was born near Ripley, (Red Oak) Brown County, Ohio, on September 14, 1838. She moved with her parents to Kendall County when she was sixteen years old, while Mr. Cherry came here with his parents when he was eighteen years old.

Following his marriage, Jay bought and settled on a farm situated on Section 12, Na-au-say Township, where he lived until the spring of 1896, in which he moved onto his father's homestead, Section 1, of Na-au-say Township.

Mr. and Mrs. Updike were blessed with six children: Jennie Una E., born August 31, 1893 in Kendall Co, Illinois, and died 9 SEP 1894 in Na-au-say Twp, Kendall Co, Illinois; Marshall Clarence, born January 20, 1895 in Plainfield, Will Co., Ill. and died May 27, 1964 in Fox Twp, Kendall Co, Illinois. He married Florence Genevieve Otto on August 22, 1925, daughter of August Otto, and Mary Jane "Mae" Mitchell; Mildred E., born June 16, 1896 in Aurora, Kane Co, Illinois, and died Jan. 4 1985 in Countryside Nursing Center, Aurora, Illinois; Genevieve M., July 14, 1898 in Aurora, Kane Co, Illinois, and died on December 6 1983 in Countryside Nursing Home, Plainfield, Will Co, Illinois; Lester Milton, born January 15, 1903 in Plainfield, Will Co, Illinois, and died in January 1970 in Sandwich, DeKalb Co, Illinois, and Harold, born April 5, 1905 in Plainfield, Will Co, Illinois, and died March 27 1968 in Sugar Grove, Kane Co, Illinois. He married Almeda P. Palmer on December 6, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of Edward B. Palmer and Mabel L. Eib. She was born on August 9, 1904 in Elwood, Will Co, Illinois, and died on December 6, 1989 in Mercy Center Hospital, Aurora, Kane Co, Illinois.

Mr. Updike and his wife belonged to the Baptist Church. They were referred to as people of worth and stood very high in the community where they have practically spent their lives.

Jay was born in Tompkins County, NY., a son of Albert Updike, born in the same place, October 7, 1825, son of Abram Grover Updike, and Lorinda H. (probably for "Hoos") HOOPER, of Holland decent. She was the daughter of Lawrence HOOPER & Caroline HOOS. Lawrence was the son of Stephen HOOPER and Hannah ____.

Albert Updike married in his native county, Sarah Esther Brokaw, born in Tompkins County, NY., October 22, 1828, daughter of Caleb I. and Mary (French) Brokaw, natives of New Jersey, born October 12, 1792, and May 15, 1792, respectfully.
