Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Born in Ireland, he migrated to Illinois as a child and was educated becoming a lawyer. In 1846, he was commissioned a Captain by Governor Ford of Illinois, to organize a contingent that served in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel of the 18th Illinois Regiment serving in Kentucky and Tennessee. Promoted Brigadier General in November 1862, he commanded a brigade in the XIII Corps in the Vicksburg campaign, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Big Black River Bridge and served in Louisiana Department of the Gulf. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he resumed leagle practice and was a farmer.
