Growing up during the end of the Depression and the start of WWII, she learned how to work hard. She started working at the age of 12 in a drugstore, later moving to the soda fountain portion, to help support her and her mother. When she wasn't in school or working, she could be found either roller skating or riding horses. At the age of 17, she met and married her first husband, Army Sergeant Lewis J. Holmes Sr.
After her husband retired from the Army, Betty went to work to help support the family as a licensed beautician, owning her own shop for a while, and later as a waitress and the night manager of the restaurant she worked at. Betty and Lewis eventually divorced in 1961.
In 1962, Betty met and married Sam Edwards, an engineer by trade, in November of 1962. Sam, Betty and family moved to Del Rio in 1966 so that Sam could work on the Amistad Dam Project. At the project's completion, Sam accepted a job at NAS Chase field in Beeville, Texas. During her marriage to Sam, Betty nursed her mother through a debilitating stroke and partial recovery from 1975 until her death in 1982, raising two of her granddaughters during the same timeframe. After a cancer diagnosis in early 1985, Sam passed away in the latter part of the same year.
Jess Favors came into Betty's life in 1989, and they married in 1991. In 1992, they left Beeville and moved to Floresville, where Jess lived with Betty until his death on Valentine's Day in 2003.
Betty will always be remembered as a fun-loving, kind, compassionate, spunky and overall wonderful lady who was never afraid of a little hard work and was totally devoted to her family and friends. She was one of the loudest fans at her grandson's band concerts/contests and proudly told fans in the stands at Tiger football games that "#72 is my grandson." And, she got even louder still while watching granddaughter Shelby, #45, play as part of the Jaguar Varsity Girls Basketball team. She attended every one of their games during the 2009-2010 Season to cheer on the team as they brought home the District-4A Region Quarter Finals Championship.
