Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman, US Senator. He was admitted to the bar in 1834 and was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. In 1848, he served as Attorney General of Pennsylvania and was elected to the United States Senate in 1849, serving until 1855. At the start of the Civil War in 1861, he was authorized by President Abraham Lincoln to raise a volunteer Maryland Brigade and commissioned Brigadier General. He campaigned in West Virginia until 1862 and due to poor health he was appointed commandant at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, serving until his death.
