Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Parkman, Ohio, he graduated from West Point in 1839 and served in the Mexican War. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was elected Colonel of the 9th Illinois Infantry and promoted Brigadier General in September 1861. He commanded the 4th Division Army of Mississippi at the battles of Corinth, Island Number Ten and Fort Pillow. Placed in command of District of West Kentucky, he deployed his corps in guarding railroads from Confederate raiders from November 1862 to April 1864. Formally reprimanded for brutality toward civilians and violating their civil rights while commanding troops in West Kentucky, he resigned in November 1864. After the war, he engaged in law practice until his death.
