Civil War Union Brigadier General. Responding to the call to arms at the outbreak of the Civil War, he recruited the 38th New York Infantry and was appointed Colonel. He led the 38th New York at the Battle of Bull Run, in the Peninsula Campaign and the Virginia Campaign. In October 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General and saw continued action in Northern Virginia. In 1863, he was assigned command of a Brigade in the III Corps and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. During the Overland Campaign, he was again wounded and honorably discharged in July 1864. After the war, he served as a clerk in the Superior Court of New York City until 1896.
