Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point 17th in the class of 1835, was commissioned an officer of artillery and fought the Creeks and the Seminoles. He was then assigned quartermaster duty, resigned from the Army in 1843 and became a businessman and railroad executive. When the Civil War began, he reentered the military as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps. In the spring of 1861, with the concern that the armaments in the US Arsenal at St Louis, Missouri, would be seized by Confederates, Captain Stokes arranged to have the surplus moved to Illinois. In 1862, he recruited for the Chicago Board of Trade Battery, was promoted Major and saw action at Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. He was then assigned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Quartermaster's Department and as an assistant adjutant general. For distinguished service, he was promoted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in July 1865. After the war, he became involved in the real estate business in New York City.
