Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, he graduated from US Military Academy in 1843, as an officer of engineers and served in the Mexican War. In 1852, he resigned from the Army and became a professor of mathematics at the Rochester University New York. With the start of the Civil War, he was appointed a Colonel of the 13th New York Regiment and saw action in Baltimore. Promoted Brigadier General in March 1862, he commanded the 7th Division of the Army at Vicksburg, Coldwater and Helena. During the assault on the Confederates at Fort Pemberton in April 1863, he became severely ill and had to leave the field, resigning from active service in December 1863. He resumed his duties as professor and was appointed United States Marshal for the Northern District of New York in 1869.
