SAN ANGELO — Nettie Lee Bryant, 95, passed peacefully to be with the Lord, joining her husband, Homer "Doc" Bryant on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006. She was a longtime resident of Mertzon, Texas. Family visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Johnson's Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in Sherwood Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Phillip Steinbach.
Nettie Lee was the fourth of 10 children of Cornelius Stanley and Laura Lee (Candler) Westbrook. She was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Carlsbad, Texas. She attended school in Carlsbad and Veribest. She and Doc were married on Dec. 29, 1929. They began farming near Carlsbad, Veribest then Miles, Texas. They went on to begin a dairy farm east of San Angelo.

On Oct. 12, 1949, the Bryant family moved to acreage they purchased in Sherwood along Spring Creek. It was here that Nettie Lee and Doc worked side by side to establish a dairy business. The dairy was significant, in that it furnished milk to Gandy's Creamery. It remained in operation until Doc's death in 1974.

Nettie Lee held great pride in knowing their dairy provided important nutrition for children of our area. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club of the Sykes Community. Later in life she was a resident of the Rio Concho Manor where she volunteered to assist other residents. She would never miss a dance or an opportunity to challenge someone in a game of cards. Nettie Lee was a good neighbor. We remember her most for her strong will, gentle ways and ability to listen.

Nettie Lee is survived by her two daughters, Vennie Lou Tankersley and husband Jackson of Mertzon, and Jan Bryan and husband Mike of San Angelo; her son, William Bryant and wife LuAnn of San Angelo; two sisters, Minnie Hutchison and husband Bill of Orlando, Fla., and Betty Martin and husband JD of Lampasas, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Alice Westbrook of San Antonio, Texas, and Josephine Westbrook of San Angelo; grandchildren Karen Travland, Leslyn Tyler, Susan Bryant, Becky Tankersley, Doug Tankersley, Mitzi Scow, Penny Bryant and Whit Bryant; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews.
