Donald was the first son of George Irving Nichols and Emma (Butler) Nichols and the twin brother of their daughter Donna Emma (Nichols) Smith. He served at the rank of Technician Fourth Grade (TEC4), often addressed as Sergeant, during World War II in the 2829th Engineer Combat Battalion, earlier called the 1st Battalion of the 40th Engineer Combat Regiment, US Army Corps of Engineers. He enlisted on 23 Nov 1942 at Fort Douglas, Utah, and was discharged there on 21 Nov 1945. He was known as "Nick" during his military service and later was foreman and photographic technician for Riley Reproductions Company. He died at age 33 from complications following fracture of the left tibia and fibula during a skiing accident.
