Mr. Andres had charge of a force of five hands and was repairing the trolley along North Tryon street. At the time of the accident they were engaged in mending the trolley at the switch whre the line turns from Tryon street, going into Ward 4. The Davidson child and several other children were playing on the street and had been on the car, but were ordered off by the workmen.
At 4 o'clock the construction car which was attached to a passenger car, was backed down toward the depot so as to let the street cars pass in and out of Ward 4. After the cars had passed going in each direction, the construction car, pushed by the passenger car behind, was started back to repair the trolley.
Mr. Andrews was at the motor in the passenger car and the Davidson child swung on to the font of the work car, whree he was cut off from the vision of Mr. Andrews. As the car started the little fellow lost his grip and fell, his head striking on the rail. He screamed and several persons who saw the occurence shouted to the motorman. When Mr. Andrews heard the cries he cut off the current to let the car run back down grade, but it was too late. The wheel had already passed over the head of the child, which was crushed into a pulp.
The body was lifted from under the car by Richard Kirkland, a negro laborer in the employment of the 4Cs and the police were phoned for. The call was responded to by Chief of Police H.C. Irwin and Officers Pitts and Summerrow. They took the remains in the patrol wagon and drove to the home of the child's parents, on North Church street. Then, by the request of the mother of the dead boy, the body was taken to the undertaking establishment of J.M. Harry & Co, where it was prepared for interment.
Chief of Police Irwin arrested Mr. Andrews and summoned him to appear before Recorder F.M. Shannonhouse this morning for a preliminary hearing or investigation of the case...
The parents of the dead boy were almost prostrated by the sad occurrence. mr. Davidson is a moulder, in the employ of the Cole Manufacturing Company, east of this city, and was at work when the accident happened. He was immediately sent for and reached his home shortly after the remains had been taken to the undertaker's establishment.
The funeral of the child will be conducted at the parents' residence this afternoon at 3 30 o'clock by Rev. Dr. John W. Stagg, pastor at the Second Presbyterian church. The pall-bearers will be chosen from the Sunday school class of the deceased.
