Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when he enlisted in the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry. Commissioned a Captain, he was put in command of company in the Cavalry Corps stationed at Washington DC, in August 1861. In 1862, he was placed in the cavalry division of the Army of the Potomac on the staff of General Philip Sheridan. He became one of Sheridan's most trusted officers in the Richmond, Petersburg Campaigns and was promoted Brigadier General in September, 1863. In 1864, he was assigned to the Union V Corps and was sent to Virginia to set up an offensive to cut off Confederate supply wagons. At the Battle of Hatcher's Run February 1865, even after being wounded he served with distinction in helping secure the victory. For actions at Hatcher's Run, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 21, 1865. After the war, he became a prominent New York lawyer.
