William was a veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War, enlisting as a private on 23 Feb 1864, age given as 21 and residence as Butler County, Pennsylvania; that same day he was mustered into C Company of the 100th Pennsylvania Infantry; he was mustered out on 24 Jul 1865.

He seems to be the William R. Pence, age 25, born in Pennsylvania, who was a farmer living alone in Medina Twp, Peoria County, illinois, in 1870; he and Julia and two children were in O'Neill Twp, San Joaquin County, California, in 1880; in 1900, 1910 and 1920, the family was in McCulloch County.
