Maurice Clark Gardner died peacefully Sept. 10, 2010, in Show Low. He was born Dec. 6, 1918, in Taylor.
Maury, as he was known to friends and family, was the oldest of eight children born to William Clark Gardner and Alice Willis Gardner. Much of his youth was spent on the family ranch in Linden, where he learned to work hard and to play hard. He mastered the discipline and independence required for ranch life. Maury and his family were known for the unselfish service they rendered to all and for the fun and the joy they created wherever they went.
Maurice served in the U.S. Army during World War II. The skills he learned on the ranch were put to use when he was assigned duty at Fort Knox, Kent. working with the tank corps. A mishap with a grenade cost him a portion of his hearing. Both of his two younger brothers, Melvin and Kenneth, were killed in action as tail gunners in B-25 bombers.
Maurice married Inez Cluff and they were an inseparable pair for 62 years, until Inez' passing in 2003. Maurice was a multi-talented man. He was a master mechanic, truck driver, heavy equipment operator, pilot, carpenter, welder, cowboy, and more. He was known for his energy, independence, good humor and sound understanding. The acts of service he and Inez provided wherever they went can never be counted. For ten years he served as a dedicated Branch President of the Young Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Inez earned the love and respect of everyone. They will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his sisters, Merle Westover, Gerry Willis, Leah Beth McLaws and his son, Mike and his wife, Tomye, along with seven grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at the Heber Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and one hour prior to services. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Heber Chapel.
Funeral arrangements were handled by At Seasons End Mortuary in Apache Junction (480) 982-7721.
