Verna K. Underwood, 94, of Mount Sterling, went to her heavenly home at 4:50 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mount Sterling. She was born June 7, 1916, in "Herve Chute Holler," Cooperstown Township, Brown County, the second child of Roy W. (Hooker) Ray and Lillie M. (Cameron) Ray. She married H. Dale Underwood on the 17th of August, 1937, in Palmyra, Mo., and he preceded her in death Oct. 23, 2005. She was the mother of Patsy (Underwood) Beisswingert-Skinner of Alamogordo, N.M., Judy (Underwood) Newell-Henderson of Kansas City, Mo., David R. Underwood, deceased, and Douglas D. Underwood of Mount Sterling.

Verna is survived by her children Patt and husband, Burt, Judy, Doug and his wife Tammy; one sister Doris (Ray) Snyder Varrell and husband Keith of Fort Myers, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Leonard Beisswingert and his wife Tina, Brian Beisswingert, Susan Beisswingert Merritt, Steven Newell and fiancee Diane, Aaron Newell and wife Julie, Stephanie Newell Goens and husband Ron, Sara Underwood, Brian Underwood and Kristin Underwood; two stepgrandchildren, Alicia Volk and Jessie Galloway; and 10 great-grandchildren, Michael Merritt, Trevor Ricci-Beisswingert, Hannah Beisswingert, Michael Newell, Nicole Newell, Katie Goens, Kelsey Goens, Kyle Goens and Aubrey and Alivia Frazier. Four stepgreat-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; a son, David R. Underwood; three brothers, Wendell E. Ray, Roy W. Ray Jr., and Wilbur D. Ray; and one sister Elma Ray Lenger.

Verna and her husband, Dale were farmers all their lives and only moved from the farm to Mount Sterling in 2000. They were good stewards of their land and enjoyed their life as successful farmers for over 60 years. She went to La Grange and Ferndale Grade Schools. She lived in Brown County all of her life except for a few years in her teens and twenties in Schuyler County. She was first a member of the Cooperstown Baptist Church until it disbanded and then the Versailles Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school teacher for many years in those churches. She recently became a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Sterling.

Services were entrusted to Hendricker Funeral Home of Mount Sterling, Illinois.
