Irving attended PS 144 in Brooklyn, and then left high school after one year in order to help in his father's business. He worked with his father in Manhattan, and later moved on to work with him in his Brooklyn store at 67 Manhattan Avenue.

After a while, he and another salesman, Louis Bilus, started their own store at nearby 88 Manhattan Avenue. At the same time Irving had another store on Broadway, in Brooklyn. These stores did well for a while, but were not able to hold up long term.

Later on Irving had jobs working as a clothing salesman on Pitkin Avenue, on Fulton Street, and for a Mr. Werman at 98 Manhattan Avenue, a job he kept for many years.

It was while working on Manhattan Avenue that he met Frances Shatkin, whose father, Jacob, had a cloak and suit store near 92 Manhattan Avenue. They were married in 1929, and lived at 154 Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn. Later on they lived in several Brooklyn locations, including Park Place, Sterling Place, and finally at East 26th Street and Farragut Road.
In the later years, when Irving worked in the Bronx, the Waldmans decided to retire to Florida. Irving took ill in Florida in 1980, and finally succumbed in August of that year.
