At the start of the Civil War, he was a Major and part of an expedition that was sent to Florida to quell the rebellion in that state, but was taken prisoner by the Confederates. After being exchanged in August 1862, he was appointed Brigadier General in the Union Army X Corps. He commanded his forces at Folly Island, the Second Battle of Charlston Harbor and at the Military District of Florida in early 1864. Toward the close of the war, he was commander of the defenses at Norfolk and Portsmouth Virginia, and for his services was brevetted Brigadier General in the Regular Army.
