Ollie Andrew was was born in Summertown in Lawrence Co., Tennessee, in 1919, one of twelve children born to Calvin Lester and Mattie Caroline Hendrix Staggs. He was a decendent of Joseph staggs,Sr., an early settler of Wayne Co,.Tn., who settled on 48 Mile Creek around 1816-1818.
He was delivered by Dr. H.A. Campbell, who said he was the largest baby he ever delivered, weighing over thirteen pounds. He was the 718th baby to be delivered. As young boys,he and his brothers often worked on farms for 25 and 50 cents a day to help out their family of 14.
He died on Monday, June 12,2000 at 81,in Florence, Alabama. the funeral was Wednesday, June 14, at spry chapel at 11 a.m. with entombment in tri-Cities Mausoleum.
Brother Lawrence Williams officiated at the funeral. He was a longime resident of Lauderdale County. during his life the had been in the U.S. Navy, worked at TVA as an ironworker and been a member of Glendale and East Florence Churches of christ.
Survivors include his wife, Mamie R. Staggs;son, Gerald Staggs and wife, Reva, Florence;sisters, Lora Johnson and Irene Blade, both of Lewisburg, TN.,Alice Bryam, Manchester,TN;, Maggie Staggs, Summertown, TN,;brothers, Robert Staggs, Summertwon, T.N., and Charles Staggs of Peoria, Ill.; and one granddaughter, Kimberly Staggs King.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dorrie Ray Staggs; brothers, Hubert Staggs, L.B. Staggs, Marshall staggs and James Staggs; sister Mary Jane Eastep.
Pallbearers included Jim McAdams, David McFall, Doyle Smith, J.D. Choat, Loyd Kind and Jerry Brown.
