Civil War Union Brigadier General US Congressman. Born in Perryville, Ohio, he was a lawyer in practice when he enlisted in the National Army and commissioned a Captain in the 22nd Ohio Volunteers. In August 1861, he assisted in recruiting the 57th Ohio infantry and was appointed Colonel. He fought in General William T. Sherman's campaigns, was wounded several times was promoted Brigadier General in 31 May 1865. After the war he entered politics and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving 1875 to 1879.
