H B Cooper Dies
Retired Engineer

Horace B. Cooper, 77, Bristol Center, died today (July 22, 1954) following a long illness.
Born in Canandaigua, Mr. Cooper had been a lifelong resident of Ontario County. He retired in 1946 after nearly 27 years with the New York State Highway Department. Prior to his work with the Highway Department, Mr. Cooper was associated with John Handrahan, Canandaigua, civil engineer, who mapped out the Sonnenberg grounds, and then was superintendent of the Athabar (sp.?) Construction Co., of Albany. With this concern, Mrs. Cooper had charge of the construction of the Barge Canal siphon lock at Oswego, first of its kind to be constructed in the United States, and the largest of its kind in the world.
One of the founders of the YMCA 50 years ago, Mr. Cooper had been active in civic affairs. He was a member of St. John's Church. His wife, Jessie Havens Cooper, died Apr. 10, 1953.
He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Marcia Cooper, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. John C. Burchard, Ithaca; three sons, Horace B. Cooper, Jr., Canandaigua; Edward F. Cooper and William M. Cooper [sic], both of Baltimore; seven grandchildren; and two sisters. Mrs. Mary Symonds, Castile, and Mrs. R. N. Clarke, Newburg.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
