Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born at Steubenville, Ohio, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1847, was commissioned an officer in the US Infantry and served in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel of the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and fought in western Virginia. Promoted Brigadier General in November 1862, he commanded a brigade of the II Corps in the Peninsular Campaign and at Fredericksburg. In April 1863, he was assigned recruit duty in Ohio and spent the last two years of the war recruiting in California. After the war, he served in a number of posts on western frontier before retiring in Washington D.C. in 1888.
