First Lieutenant, Company M, commanding the Pack Train during the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn. Part of Benteen's Battalion. Survived the battle.

Born in Besancon, France, the son of Jules and Jeanette Barbier Mathey, he arrived with his family in New Orleans, LA from Le Havre, France, in 1845, settling at Corydon, Ind. and later at New Albany. He worked in his brother Adolph's saloon in New Albany, and applied for US citizenship on 28 April 1859. Enlisted as Private in April 1861 in Company C, 17th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Appointed First Sgt, then 2nd Lt, in May 1862. Transferred to 81st Indiana Infantry, fought at Stone River, Tunnel Hill, Buzzard Roost, and Battle of Chickamauga. Appointed 1st Lt 21 March 1863, Captain 8 Nov 1863. Fought in Battles of Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, Jonesborough, Kingston, Marietta, Lovejoy Station, and siege of Atlanta. Appointed Major on 12 Sept 1864. Mustered out 13 June 1865 and worked as store clerk in Corydon, IN. Appointed 2nd Lt, 7th Cavalry, 24 Sept 1867. Appointed 1st Lt, 10 May 1870. Married Meda Jones on 8 Nov 1871 in Corydon, Ind; one daughter, Julia, born 10 Sept 1877. In the 1868, 1874, 1876, and 1877 Indian Campaigns. Promoted to Captain, 30 Sept 1877. At Fort Totten, Dakota, in 1878-79. Retired for disability as Major, 11 Dec 1896. Appointed as Professor of Military Science, Baylor University, Waco, Texas, 1901-1903. Appointed Colonel, Retired, 23 April 1904. Died in 1915, cause of death: intestinal paresis, renal congestion, following aprostatectomy and adenoma of the prostate.
